about

A half year on from The Victory Garden, I had moved to New York for school. Bruce had remained in San Francisco and joined a trio named Defeatist Attitude as bassist, and through that group he met Mark Barbeau, who would become our manager. On my winter visit to San Francisco, we first recorded with Bruce on bass, returning to the same studio and to one of the same songs, although a careful reader will notice a slight change in its spelling, probably due to a typographical error in the tape notes. The TR-606 returned on drums, exiting our saga after this recording. The shattered glass is real; we went around the corner from the studio to buy glass drink bottles and recorded their breaking in a trash can. In New York, I had a small portable stereo system with a shortwave radio, which supplied the foreign language broadcast. Lost Echoes was our third cassette, copied at home for friends, skeptical club bookers, and uninterested record labels; only a few dozen were ever in circulation.

Music and production by M-1 Alternative (Joshua Maremont and Bruce Musser).

Recorded on 1-16-1983 at John Altmann Recording.

Engineered by M. Razor.

All tracks restored and transferred from the 1/4" stereo master tape by Tardon Feathered at Mr. Toad's in 2015.

Album mastered by Joshua Maremont at The Pancake Institute in 2023.

No compression or limiting was used in the mastering process.

Please download lossless formats; the audio files are 96kHz and 24-bit.

The photo is of the sky over Whaleship Plaza. The Old Waldorf, a small club in which a number of our early influences played, was located there. I purchased my first analog delay pedal after watching two groups use them on that stage.

This album continues the release of the studio recordings of M-1 Alternative between 1981 and 1992.
